And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.”
Matthew 22:35-38 – Scripture of the Day (February 11, 2014)
What a powerful answer to the question asked by the lawyer! By quoting the Deuteronomy 6:5 verse, Jesus summed up in a single sentence what the relationship between man and God is all about: love. Love that encompasses our entire being. A love of God shown with all of our emotions (heart) and with the entirety of the essence of our life (soul). A love that is completely dedicated to comprehending the revealed knowledge of God (mind). Christians, God will be the absolute center of everything we are and ever hope to be if we have this kind of love for him! (Rom. 12:1)
What does it mean to love God? Simply put, it means to obey him (John 14:15, 21, 23-24; 15:10; 1 John 5:3; 2 John 6). All of our emotions will be focused on obeying him. The essence of our lives will be centered on keeping his commandments. We will not rest until we have filled our minds with knowing and understanding his will for us as revealed in his Word.
Does that describe your relationship with God, friend?
